Day 5

It's easy today. R&R. Tis the day we turn to tourist mode. What's more, I have less to write as I have finally gotten a card reader to upload all the photos. So just follow the link above. The shot above are some of my favourite, though : I name them " Many Schools, One Team"
This is the video when we were on the same "boat" screaming our heart out ;-)

Day 4

As I was thinking about the highs of yesterday, I am finally settled down to write the updates for day 4. If we can improve day by day like this and things can get better and better like what the team is experiencing for day 4, I would guess everyone might think twice about playing softball in Singapore. ;-). But well it is a whole lot of experience to bring back to Singapore. Team culture, training culture, softball culture, softball development model, equipment, playing field.....too many. If everyone can just pick 1 positive thing they learn here and go back home to preach and practise it, I am sure to see a brighter future for high performance softball in Singapore. For the coaches, I can only borrow a tagline to sum up our conviction to School's Softball "To learn, therefore I Teach(coach)".
Cut the cliche and to the game. We were scheduled to play the Puli Junior High today, but as the coach pointed out that they may be too young to spar competitively with our team, he suggested a re-match with the Senior High team (Puli National Vocational Institute) team after they have finish their exams at 10am. Meanwhile the junior high team will play a 2 inning game with us.
A few things were running in my mind:
1. Great! the more games the merrier.
2. Exams ?!! and they oblige to hosting us during at this time of the year??!! Kudos to the Taiwanese for the love of the game and dedication and to Puli, your hospitality!
3. (After watching the 1st inning played against the Junior High) I must say that they are as competitive in terms of competencies though lacking in a little experience. RESPECT to the U14 girls.
The game with Senior High was as exciting as before. This time we see a more aggressive offence by Puli. Run manufacturing tactics (bunt, hit-and-run and suicide squeeze) were used against our defence. The boys were initially caught off-guard by this form of aggressive play but after a quick adjustment, we managed to defuse the threat with runner on 3rd for more than 4 occasions. The boys had a fair share of poor performance at the plate at first but managed to hit back later in the innings to score some well earned runs.
Singapore Schools Won with the score of 4-1. Report over.
The sight seeing tour to Sun Moon lake did not arouse much interest in the boys ( who preferred shopping I guess ;-)) Nonetheless, they gel better as the days go by with some sharing funny moments while waiting to bus boarding time. (Photos to show later....when I can get hold of a card reader i Taipei).
The bus ride to our Dilun Hotel was a 2 hour winding uphill route. It is definitely a pleasant surprise for us to be able to stay in a hot spring resort tug in the middle of the mountain.
The boys had a great time dipping in the hot spring. 11pm roll call seemed to come so early when they had just started to have fun playing pool, table tennis, and Karaoke. (We now know that Ben Ang is a good singer, and Barathan was screaming the songs;-).
Good times fly. Memory stays. Ciao. ZZzzzzz

Day 3

How do I start? Day 3 has just past 23 minutes ago and I still do not want to leave it behind for the feeling for the day's event was great and fruitful for the team.
We took a 3-hours plus ride to Puli, Taichung, a place famous for its scenic mountains as they have put it "山清水秀" just on time for a 9 course sumptuous lunch.
We had our game at 1pm with the Puli National Vocational Institute's U-17 team. Our team has faced the challenge that we came for, that is to match up with male pitcher for the age group.
The team was struggling with making contact with the balls in the first 3 innings. The Puli's team had a head start 1-0, courtesy of crucial error by our fielders. We managed to hold them well with our starting pitcher, Barathan who was relieved by Yong Cai and Jerald in the later innings. Our defence worked seamlessly to counter the hustling by the opponent. With adjustment in the later innings, the hits started coming in and we fought on not only to score 2 runs, but to hold them to the 1 run. The game ended with Barathan's re-entry to give a closer.
The boys did very well for this game. It is by no mean easy to come back from behind to take the lead and hold them to a 2-1 victory. Well done boys! I am certain they will do well for day 4 game. Will upload the photos later as my card reader has gone bonkers. Oh Yah, Puli is a very beautiful place with warm sunny days and cool evening (14C). I am glad that we managed to fit our schedule for this place playing this team. Day 4 should be all worth while. Ciao! ZZzzzzzzz

Day 2

Finally it's action day. Action also for teachers as Ben Oh was running a fever this morning. The temperature went down a little after we put him to rest for whole day. Doctor at the hospital diagnose it as Acute Tonsillitis....can kill with Anti-biotics, good. Better than errr H1...Will continue to monitor his condition over the next few days.
OH yah action...The 2 games we played were both of very high standard.
Singapore Schools managed to win 15-4 against the Shilin Commerce High School, capitalising on the less experience pitcher. But scoring from their impeccable defence is by no mean easy.
With back to back schedule, we play the team we came for, Song Yuan High School (They had just won the Taiwan, yes! Taiwan, High School Softball Championship) This team, despite their younger age, is so well trained that we can equate them to our say under-19 boys distance for distance. We ride on the stick from the first game to score 5-0 till the 4th inning where by crucial errors and walks allowed them to catch up to 5-7. Nonetheless, Team Singapore Schools adjusted to tighter defence and offence to catch up with runners on bases. Unfortunately, the game was abandoned due to poor visibility as the sky started to get dark at 5pm. It was really an eye open for all of us. the starting pitcher is just a 14 year-old girl and her speed is easily 85plus at 40ft. Really an eye opener. We would have lost with respect. but I guess the experience take home for the boys is priceless. This should let us be better prepared for tougher games to come on day 3 in Puli.

It is shopping time for us at another Baseball and Softball specialty shop. Dinner is free and easy in Ximen Ding, a famous shopping district for young people. That leaves the "old teachers" having dinner hosted by the committee member, Mr Tang of the Taiwan Softball Association.
Roll call at 2230hrs done. Guess everyone is tired after the hectic afternoon. It's early set off tomorrow to Puli..here we come. Photos link below. ZZZzzzz

First Day Updates

By the time I am at the computer typing this, my mind is already in bed ZZzzzz. But well, I have always enjoyed softball trip to taiwan. Partly because every trip is always an eye opener...even before our first match.
Day 1 actually started at 1020 at Changi Airport. Everyone was on time and checking in was smooth. 2 movies and a hearty inflight meal, we touched down, greeted by the Guide, Jeff. The first stop is Flyup Baseball and softball equipment store.....think the "mecca" of Softballers shopping needs with 30%discount. Guess the boss can chalk up enough sales to close for tomorrow. Boys really can shop. I have never doubted that fact :-)
Strangely, nobody complaint of getting hungry. The power of softball retail therapy.
When all are done shopping for softball gears, it was a short walk to the Shilin Tourist Night Market. Though it is not as authentic as the roadside one that I used to visit, guess it is safer and less complicated for big group like us. But food taste good! Seriously, food does not taste good just because we are hungry, it is Great! The Boys agreed to that when they sank their teeth to the big fat juicy steak. But Steak in Taiwan? Not mee sua? Mr Toh, Miss Lee and Myself stuck to local delicacies....can miss the chance.
I wonder if the boys can still sleep with a FULL stomach.
But guess they will have to catch some sleep as we will have 2 afternoon matches with Shilin High School tomorrow. The scheduling is just right. OK enough..photos
